Surveyor (Natural Gas Utility)
JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE
The surveyor will have strong technical knowledge of natural gas distribution and experience supporting pipeline infrastructure projects. This role performs and leads advanced field and office surveying work to support system expansion projects, pipeline replacement programs, measurement and regulation (M&R) station design, right‑of‑way development, and GIS data integrity.
The surveyor ensures all survey deliverables meet engineering requirements, utility standards, and regulatory expectations—supporting safe, accurate construction and long-term asset records.
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Serve as a company subject matter expert on one or more of the following disciplines: design and construction surveying, geodetic surveying, geomatics technology, GIS, route surveying, land boundary, or project management.
- Has advanced working knowledge of property rights, land rights acquisition, and property transactions.
- Consult with service management, consultants, developers, surveyors, engineers, attorneys, and customers to resolve land and easement related issues.
- Engage and coordinate with contractors and consultants to ensure the scope, quality, and consistency of work.
- Coordinate and communicate with survey and right-of-way team members to deliver and complete assigned work.
- Assign and route work for company crews and contractors according to work priorities.
- Actively contribute to the development of field crew members and office staff.
- Provide mentoring and guidance to field crew members and office staff in the compliance and implementation of business and technical processes.
- Responsible for managing the completion and delivery of concurrent work orders and deliverables.
- Interpret deeds, maps, field notes, and easement documents, and provide guidance and direction on complex technical issues.
- Prepare and certify final maps, sketches, documents, and field notes.
- Review and approve field and office work of junior staff as applicable.
- Review, approve, and certify deliverables prepared by survey technicians, associate surveyors, and surveyors.
- Lead the preparation and presentation of technical and business documents.
- Consult and support management on technical matters related to surveying and right-of-way.
- Lead initiatives and projects to improve department and technical processes.
- Assist in the performance evaluation of assigned staff.
- Assist in the preparation of project and operating budgets as applicable.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Minimum education required of the position
- Bachelor’s degree in Geomatics, Engineering, or related field
Minimum experience required of the position
- Requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in geomatics/surveying with a minimum of 2 years of experience as a professional land surveyor
Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities preferred of the position
- Have advanced knowledge of at least one of the following applications: ArcGIS, Civil 3D, or Trimble Business Center
- Possess advanced knowledge of field data collection equipment (GNSS, total stations, level, data collectors, laser scanning, drones, etc.)
- Possess proficient knowledge of the Microsoft 365 product suite specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
Any certificates, licenses, etc. required for the position
- Must be a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS) in the state of application/employment (will accept licensure in other states within the company’s service territories)
Physical Requirements
- Able to operate a motor vehicle, including the ability to enter and exit vehicle unassisted.
- Able to perform on-site inspections.
- Able to operate a personal computer, either desktop or laptop.
- Able to sit for extended periods of time.
- Able to operate a copy machine, fax machine, calculator, telephone, and other miscellaneous office equipment.
- Able to exert up to 50 lb. of force occasionally and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, or move objects.

- Able to work in a field environment, which may include construction sites located away from paved roads and may involve crossing through mud, debris, heavy foliage, creeks, or pastureland. Field environment may also involve being around livestock and/or wild animals.

- Able to function successfully in environment with moderate pressure to meet deadlines.
- Able to work overtime, scheduled and/or unscheduled as needed or required to meet established deadlines.
- Perform Emergency Operation Plan (EOP) assignments, which involve long workdays and challenging field conditions following major storms.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned within your scope of responsibilities.
- Ability to comprehend, document, calculate, visualize, and analyze is required.
- Able to work daily in all types of weather conditions.
- Able to respond to emergency calls and/or callouts and occasionally return to work while off duty.
- Able to wear and operate personal protective equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hard hat, gloves, protective footwear, and earplugs.
