Gas Locator
A. JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Under Class A supervision, must be able to perform locates of underground gas facilities with the use of utility maps, computer applications, various specialized locate equipment, probe rods, and/or shovel excavation. Must be able to report any discrepancies with verbal and written communications including drawing representations. Assist in working closely with contractors to ensure safe excavation processes are being followed including investigation and reporting of excavation damages.
Gas Locator Apprentice:
- Assist in performing detailed and precise locates of gas facilities within guidelines of Delta Utilities and Dig Law requirements.
- Assist in planning, laying-out, and directing all work in a safe and efficient manner.
- Assist in use of maps, computer applications, specialized locate equipment, probe rods, historical records, and/or shovel excavation to ensure proper locates.
- Help coordinate assistance from other personnel and departments with problem locates.
- Assist in working closely with state, parish, city, other utilities, and contractors to ensure proper and safe excavation practices are performed around gas facilities.
- Assist in testing for and locating above ground gas leaks.
- Assist in first responder to gas emergency situations recognizing hazards, conduct site assessment, establish control of site, coordinate making site safe and coordinate gas shutdown or repair.
- Assist in making thorough and complete investigations of damaged gas facilities.
- Assist in operating several computer applications related to the Gas Business and locate tickets.
- Perform atmospheric corrosion inspections on meter sets.
Gas Locator 2nd Class:
- Perform all duties of a Gas Locator Apprentice.
- Perform detailed and precise locates of gas facilities within guidelines of Delta Utilities and Dig Law requirements.
- Plan, layout, and direct all work in a safe and efficient manner.
- Use of maps, computer applications, specialized locate equipment, probe rods, historical records, and/or shovel
- excavation to ensure proper locates.
- Coordinate assistance from other personnel and departments with problem locates.
- Work closely with state, parish, city, other utilities, and contractors to ensure proper and safe excavation practices are performed around gas facilities.
- Test for and locate on above ground gas leaks.
- First responder to gas emergency situations recognizing hazards, conduct site assessment, establish control of site, coordinate making site safe and coordinate gas shutdown or repair.
- Make thorough and complete investigations of damaged gas facilities.
- Adequately operate several computer applications related to the Gas Business and locate tickets.
- Perform gas meter turn on/off work, meter read eave on, changing meter face plates, basic meter/lMU data collection
- Perform general maintenance including but not limited to tightening fittings or applying tape for above ground meter set leaks.
Gas Locator 1st Class:
- Perform all duties of a Gas Locator 2"Class.
- Test for and locate above ground gas leaks.
- Perform atmospheric corrosion inspections on residential meter sets.
- Efficiently operate several computer applications related to the Gas Business and locate tickets.
B. EXPERIENCE AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Gas Locator Apprentice:
- Must have worked at least one year in the utility or construction industry performing work requiring a mechanical aptitude with demonstrated use of maps/prints for detailed measurement dimensions for pinpointing facilities with three dimensional measurements. OR One year or experience directly related to the gas business. OR One year of utility locate experience. Must meet all qualifications within six months after employment.
- Know Company's safety rules, be able to administer all approved methods of resuscitation, and be able to render practical
- first aid.
- General knowledge of gas pipeline Damage Prevention and Locating Standards
- Obtain/maintain an automobile and truck driver's license, TWIG card or other applicable required license, background check, or ID.
- Have some knowledge of city streets, and roads in rural sections.
- Be responsible for Company tools, instruments and equipment.
- Know Company's practices and standards as related to type of work.
- Know location of, and be able to operate all of the firefighting equipment. Know what kind of equipment to use on electrical, oil, gas, and other fires.
- Satisfactorily complete all necessary and mandatory training requirements associated with the position.
Gas Locator 2nd Class:
- Must have worked at least three years in the utility or construction industry performing work requiring a mechanical aptitude with demonstrated use of maps/prints for detailed measurement dimensions for pinpointing facilities with three dimensional measurements. OR Three years or experience directly related to the gas business. OR Three years of utility locate experience.
- Know Company's safety rules, be able to administer all approved methods of resuscitation, and be able to render practical first aid.
- Practical knowledge of gas pipeline Damage Prevention and Locating Standards
- Have and maintain an automobile and truck driver's license, TWIG card or other applicable required license, background check, or ID.
- Know city streets, and roads in rural sections.
- Be responsible for Company tools, instruments and equipment.
- Know Company's practices and standards as related to type of work.
- Know location of, and be able to operate all of the firefighting equipment. Know what kind of equipment to use on electrical, oil, gas, and other fires.
- Satisfactorily complete all necessary and mandatory training requirements associated with the position.
Gas Locator 1st Class:
- Must have worked at least five years in the utility or construction industry performing work requiring a mechanical aptitude with demonstrated use of maps/prints for detailed measurement dimensions for pinpointing facilities with three dimensional measurements. OR Five years or experience directly related to the gas business. OR Five years of utility locate experience.
- Know Company's safety rules, be able to administer all approved methods of resuscitation, and be able to render practical first aid.
- Comprehensive knowledge of gas pipeline Damage Prevention and Locating Standards
- Have and maintain an automobile and truck driver's license, TWIG card or other applicable required license, background check, or ID.
- Know city streets, and roads in rural sections.
- Be responsible for Company tools, instruments and equipment.
- Know Company's practices and standards as related to type of work.
- Know location of and be able to operate all of the firefighting equipment. Know what kind of equipment to use on electrical, oil, gas, and other fires.
- Satisfactorily complete all necessary and mandatory training requirements associated with the position.
C. PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to detect presence of natural gas.
- Must have full use of mental and physical faculties.
- Have strength and endurance adequate for traversing construction areas with uneven surfaces walking up to 5 miles a day in all kinds of outdoor weather conditions.
- Good hand/eye coordination, physical dexterity, and color vision.
D. PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Be particularly alert in observing hazards communicating issues, abnormal operating conditions, and avoiding accidents.
- Be willing to work under unusual surroundings, as well as the normal working conditions pertaining to this job.
- Have a temperament suited to jobs where manual dexterity, precision and patience are particularly essential.
- Be able to receive and transmit orders and instructions in such a manner as to inspire respect and confidence
- of both superiors and coworkers.
Notice: As a safety sensitive position, compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) and Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) drug and alcohol regulations is required, including but not limited to pre-employment drug testing and background screening.
Commute/Travel: This position will have up to 75% commute daily to our customer locations within our Baton Rouge, Louisiana work territory. This position will provide a company vehicle. This position also commutes to work from their home address. Meaning when they leave home to head to work, they report to the Choctaw office location @ 6:30am daily.
