Meter Test Technician (Level I)
JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE
Tests, repairs and maintains gas meters for flow, pressure and accurate measurements; performs all aspects of large meter, regulator and relief valve installation, maintenance, calibration, testing and repair.
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs field tests on meters for calibration upon institution of service and placement into service.
- Inspects, tests, calibrates and/or repairs field test meters, city gate stations, pressure regulating stations and related equipment as scheduled by the MIS program or upon special request.
- Inspects and repairs district and rural regulators and regulators on field-test meters. Inspects and/or repairs control valves, pressure relief valves and other over pressure protection equipment.
- Installs, tests, calibrates and repairs recording instruments such as mechanical volume integrating gauges, recording pressure gauges, electronic correctors, base pressure gauges, recording thermometers and various electronic equipment supported by laptop computer.
- Installs, tests and repairs telemetering equipment, telephone modems and protective equipment.
- Adjusts distribution system operating pressures as necessary. Checks and adjusts large capacity orders and repairs as necessary.
- Assist operations personnel in the installation of large volume meter and regulator sets.
- Assists operations personnel in up-rating systems, solving pressure problems, etc.
- Assists with high bill complaint investigations requested by large-volume customers.
- Performs other miscellaneous assignments including calibrating district personnel’s pressure gauges, painting stations, and pressure study assistance.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Minimum education required of the position
- Requires a high school diploma or GED
Minimum experience required of the position
- Requires either a minimum of 3 years of natural gas operations experience or a minimum of two years of advanced technical education and/or experience in instrumentation, electronics and/or measurement applications regardless of industry.
Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities preferred of the position
- Ability to safely and effectively test, calibrate, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain gas meters and related measurement equipment to ensure accurate flow and pressure measurement.
- Working knowledge of natural gas distribution operations, including large meter, regulator, and relief valve installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair.
- Knowledge of field-testing methods, calibration practices, and the use of test equipment for verifying meter accuracy and system performance.
- Ability to inspect, adjust, and maintain pressure regulating stations, district/rural regulators, and overpressure protection equipment (control valves, relief valves, etc.).
- Skill in reading and interpreting gauges, instrument readings, charts, and test results to identify and correct issues.
- Ability to install, operate, and support mechanical and electronic recording instruments, electronic correctors, and related equipment using a laptop computer.
- Ability to accurately document inspections, tests, calibrations, and repairs in accordance with procedures and scheduling requirements.
- Ability to work independently in the field, including outdoors in all weather conditions, while following safety practices and job expectations.
Any certificates, licenses, etc. required for the position
- Valid driver’s license.
- Preferred: Must reside within 45 road miles of the reporting location.
Notice: As a safety sensitive position, compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) and Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) drug and alcohol regulations is required, including but not limited to pre-employment drug testing and background screening.
Physical Requirements
- Able to operate a motor vehicle, including the ability to enter and exit vehicle unassisted.
- Able to perform on-site inspections.
- Able to operate a personal computer, either desktop or laptop.
- Able to sit for extended periods of time.
- Able to operate a copy machine, fax machine, calculator, telephone and other miscellaneous office equipment.
- Able to exert up to 50 Lbs. of force occasionally, and /or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push or otherwise move objects.

- Able to wear and operate personal protective equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hardhat, gloves, protective footwear and earplugs daily.
- Able to be included in random drug screen pool required for DOT drivers and DOT safety sensitive positions.
- May be required to remain in the service area during emergency events and assume responsibilities assigned by the company to aide in restoration efforts.
