Specialist, Technical Training (Safety)

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE

Delta Utilities is seeking a Technical Training Specialist to join our Safety and Training team. In this role, you will play a key part in supporting the company's objectives related to technical training and operator qualifications (OQ). As a part of a collaborative team, you will work with internal customers to ensure that employees are fully qualified and compliant with regulatory and safety requirements. You will be responsible for conducting performance evaluations, creating training materials, and ensuring employees receive the necessary training and development to excel in their roles.

This position requires a solid understanding of the natural gas industry, including the operations, construction, and maintenance of gas transmission and distribution systems. You will be expected to lead the development and delivery of specialized technical training, while also identifying innovative solutions to enhance employee performance and safety.

 

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Schedule, conduct, and audit Operator Qualification (OQ) performance evaluations in line with company standards.
  • Review and contribute to the revision of OQ-related procedures and content to ensure adequacy and completeness.
  • Design and develop training and evaluation materials based on regulatory guidelines and industry best practices.
  • Create hands-on training simulations to assess and develop employee skills.
  • Facilitate effective training delivery, ensuring employees' skills are up-to-date with codes, state regulations, and company procedures.
  • Provide strategic consulting on technical training initiatives across the organization.
  • Recommend or implement changes to training to ensure alignment with safety and regulatory policies.
  • Offer ongoing technical resources and support to field personnel and supervisors to meet organizational performance goals.
  • Evaluate and enhance existing training programs to incorporate innovative solutions and improvements.
  • Assist in planning and implementing company-wide goals and standards, including input to standards committees based on training-related challenges.
  • Conduct skill assessments and assist in field performance evaluations as required.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by leadership.

 

 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Minimum experience required of the position

  • Minimum of 3 years in professional training design, delivery, or related fields or at least 2 years of experience in conducting on-the-job training and Operator Qualification (OQ) sign-offs in a natural gas operations role.
  • 5+ years of field operations experience in a natural gas utility or related industry.
  • Alternatively, 2 years of education can be substituted for 1 year of experience.

 Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities preferred of the position

  • Industry Expertise: Strong understanding of the natural gas industry, including gas transmission and distribution systems.
  • OQ Knowledge: Ability to complete and pass relevant Operator Qualification assessments and performance evaluations.
  • Field Expertise: Deep knowledge of tasks in distribution and transmission, such as plastic and steel pipe joining, pipeline construction, repair, tapping operations, pressure control, metering, and customer service.
  • Policy Familiarity: Understanding of current operational policies (e.g., Engineering, Emergency Response, Operations & Maintenance, Safety) and ability to stay current during training delivery.
  • Prioritization & Organization: Ability to prioritize training needs and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Communication & Presentation: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; capable of delivering training in both classroom and hands-on settings.
  • Training Expertise: Proven experience in training presentation and curriculum development.

Please Note: This positions primary office location would be in Shreveport, Louisiana. But it can also work out of our Louisiana OR Mississippi Service area. We are not offering relocation at this time.  

Travel: This position will have up to 35% annual travel to other facilities within our Louisiana and Mississippi locations.  A company vehicle will be provided.
