Revenue & Expense Accountant (Natural Gas Utility)
JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE
Delta Utilities is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Natural Gas Utility Revenue & Expense Accountant with experience in the utility industry, specifically natural gas operations (preferred). This role is responsible for the accurate accounting, analysis, and reporting of revenue streams and operating expenses, supporting both monthly close activities and ongoing financial operations. The position can be filled at the Analyst through Senior level, depending on experience.
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Record and reconcile monthly natural gas revenue and expense transactions, including unbilled revenue accruals, purchase gas costs, and O&M expenses.
- Ensure timely and accurate general ledger entries related to gas revenue, cost of gas sold, pipeline transportation fees, and related transactions.
- Analyze monthly revenue and expense variances and provide explanations to management.
- Establish and maintain internal controls to prevent errors and ensure accurate financial reporting for natural gas revenue and expense.
- Perform complex account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies across financial systems.
- Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, including journal entries and supporting schedules.
- Collaborate with regulatory, operations, and billing departments to ensure accurate cost allocations and rate-based reporting.
- Maintain compliance with FERC, GAAP, and internal accounting policies.
- Assist in audits and rate case support with detailed documentation and regulatory schedules.
- Participate in the development and implementation of financial systems, process improvements, internal controls, and automation initiatives.
- Provide financial data and insights to support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Minimum education required of the position
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Minimum experience required of the position
- 2–7 years of experience in accounting, with at least 2 years in the utility industry (natural gas preferred).
Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities preferred of the position
- Strong understanding of regulated utility accounting, including FERC accounting principles (preferred).
- Proficiency with accounting systems (e.g., SAP and Oracle) and Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively across departments.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Experience in revenue recognition, expense accruals, and reconciliation processes.
- Experience supporting regulatory filings, rate cases, or compliance audits.
- Familiarity with utility billing systems and meter-to-cash processes.
Any certificates, licenses, etc. required for the position
- CPA or progress toward CPA designation.

- Able to wear and operate personal protective equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hardhat, gloves, protective footwear and earplugs daily.
- Able to be included in random drug screen pool required for DOT drivers and DOT safety sensitive positions.
- May be required to remain in the service area during emergency events and assume responsibilities assigned by the company to aide in restoration efforts
